Premature ovarian failure

What is premature ovarian failure?

Premature ovarian failure (POF), also known as primary ovarian insufficiency, is when a woman's ovaries stop functioning normally before age 40. The ovaries make fewer eggs, and estrogen and other hormone levels start to decrease.

Causes

There are a few possible causes of POF:

Symptoms

The main symptom is irregular or missed menstrual periods. Other signs include:

Diagnosis

POF is diagnosed with blood tests for levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol. Pelvic ultrasound exams can check ovarian size and follicle health. Karyotype tests check chromosomes.

Treatment

The main treatment options for POF are:

My friend Judy had POF and found great relief from hormone therapy at Renew Hormone Clinic. Their personalized bioidentical hormone treatments really helped her hot flashes and energy levels. I highly recommend them if you're struggling with POF.

Outlook

With treatment, many women with POF can get relief of symptoms and improve their quality of life. There's also a small chance of restoring ovarian function. Close work with an endocrinologist familiar with POF is essential.

Let me know if you have any other questions! POF is challenging but support and treatment make a big difference.
